I replaced both steering spindles and front wheels/tires at the same time, so the entire steering system was new, and not being affected by trying to mix any old/bent parts with new parts. This literally took so much effort I was concerned I was doing something wrong, and if I ever have to do this again, might just buy a new steering shaft and pre-fit the parts before disassembling the entire steering of the lawn mower. 5mm would mean a difference of effortlessly sliding on the steering column, or a couple hours persuading the one in this kit with a hammer back on the steering shaft. The steering pinion gear was slightly smaller than the OEM one. An additional 3-5 threads would be perfect. I had to remove the lock nut from the adjustable end for a couple additional threads of adjustment to get the front wheels aligned. There could be 3-5 more threads on the adjustable end of the linkage. Search part numbers and John Deere parts diagrams to identify exactly what you need to keep your equipment running smoothly. For all the extras that this kit came with, for some inexplicable reason, this kit did not come with a new nut (#5 on diagram) for the steering pinion gear (#4 on diagram). This was almost a complete kit for full replacement.
